Seagate Exos X24 Platform Released in Dubai with 24 TB CMR Drives

Seagate has unveiled the X24 platform, and here's a comprehensive overview of its key features. For channel partners and integrators, the platform will exclusively introduce CMR drives, available in capacities of 12TB, 16TB, 20TB, and 24TB. CMR drives are optimal for various workloads so its understood that channel in Dubai will only see the CMR drives

Notably, the 24TB CMR drive will be presented as a 28TB SMR drive for large cloud clients who need largest capacities and are adept at self managing SMR.

The platform introduces four capacities, all multiples of 4TB. While this might suggest 4TB platters, the actual platter size is 2.4TB, slightly higher than the 2.2TB found in the X20. Seagate has adopted AFR as a metric for measuring drive reliability, marking the first instance where AFR is mentioned alongside MTFB in the specification sheet.

I am not sure how AFR gives a better number when it is actually calculated from an MTBF of 2.5M hours at 8760 power on hours in a year . Apply the formule

1- exp( -8760 /2500000)

And you come to an AFR ( annual failure rate ) of 0.351%.

All drives within this platform feature 512MB cache, a 7200 RPM spindle speed, 5 years limited warranty, and a 2.5 million hours MTBF, aligning with the hardware specifications of other Exos drives such as the X16 or X20.

Despite increasing capacities, transfer rates remain consistent with the X20 at 285MB/sec. The transfer rates of hard drives appear to have plateaued, with capacity increasing but transfer rates remaining unchanged.
